The environmental importance of the Copernicus program

The Copernicus (Copernicus) Earth observation program is designed to provide accurate, up-to-date and easily accessible information to improve environmental management, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure citizen security.

This initiative, led by the European Commission (EC) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), is a unified system to distribute a large amount of information, collected from space or on the ground, a long series of thematic services designed to improve the care of the environment, the quality of life of citizens and humanitarian needs, and to help develop more effective policies to develop the sustainability of our future.

All these services fall into six broad categories: land management, the marine environment, the atmosphere, emergency response, security and climate change.

Copernicus helps guide the future of our planet for the benefit of all its inhabitants.

The director of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the director of the CEPM department, Vincent-Henri Peuch, in an interview with EFEVERDE explained that the observation of the Earth is “essential” because the analysis of the information obtained by Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus system “predicts the future effects of climate change”.

The information from our satellites is “combined with that of other entities and is reanalyzed to predict the effects of climatic phenomena” in different economic sectors, data that is available to any person or entity, according to Peuch.

It is information that consults “millions of people”, has explained what he intends is to reach the largest number of users, “not only to scientists and researchers.”

For this, the organization has signed different agreements with companies and collaborating entities.

On the importance in the agriculture sector, the representative of the Telespazio company, Jean Charles Samalens, stressed that the sector depends on climate change and the analysis of Copernicus data allows farmers to prepare and face the climate crisis, in Especially those who are engaged in viticulture.

Therefore, in the words of the representative of the CEPM, Stein Vermoote, “Copernicus is not just data, it is a system that provides complete information on a series of elements such as soil moisture, irrigation, rainfall, among other issues.
