The LIFE AMDRYC4 project faces its final stage towards its closure, scheduled for December 2022, focused on transmitting the results achieved in terms of conclusions on the adaptation of rainfed agricultural systems in the Mediterranean environment to climate change. In this sense, the main challenge to be addressed is the transmission of aspects related to governance to integrate the lessons learned in terms of promoting and fostering resilience to the climate of rainfed agriculture and its sustainable, intelligent and integrated management, as a basic tool for adaptation to climate change so that they are sustainable and persistent in other areas of the Mediterranean environment.
In this context, the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies, within the framework of Action C6 – Strategy for replicability and transferability of the lessons learned in the proposal – of the LIFE AMDRYC4 project, together with the CPMR Intermediterranean Commission, organize the I MEDITERRANEAN INTERREGIONAL FORUM TO FIGHT AGAINST DESERTIFICATION, with the premise of promoting strategies applied to other areas at risk of desertification and drought such as the south of Portugal, and the south of Italy, the southeast of Greece, Malta , Cyprus and the coastal areas of the Black Sea in Bulgaria and Romania. Of course, Spain being one of the countries most exposed to desertification, this application extends to the country as a whole, as well as to other Autonomous Communities with the same challenges and risks to be addressed as those that occur in the Region of Murcia. .
During this meeting, which will be held in the city of Murcia on July 4 and 5, 2022, the possible strategies for the management and sustainable use of resources in the fight against desertification and land degradation and their effects will be discussed. synergistic with other ecosystem services, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation and biodiversity conservation. Likewise, the development of methodologies and indicators will be addressed to evaluate the transformative impacts produced in the increase of carbon (initiative 4 per thousand), in ecosystem services of natural capital and fight against the desertification of Mediterranean rainfed agricultural soils.
Thus, with the main actors gathered at the same point, a pooling will be generated with added value to the current work related to “Carbon Farming” and the “Fit to 55” package, establishing the bases of a structured collaboration between regions Europeans who face the same challenges and we can and must work together, to work for effective joint solutions.
The event will start at 12:30 on July 4 at the hands of Antonio Luengo Zapata, Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies and Mr. José Luján Alcaraz, Rector of the University of Murcia, will take place at the Víctor Villegas Auditorium and Congress Center.
